Upcoming posts

UPDATE: I've decided to change to a once-weekly posting schedule, on Saturdays. Thoughtful posts take time, both to write and for others to process, and once a week, prior to the traditional Christian day of rest, seems like a good time.

Hi all:

These are things I am thinking of writing about, or already have written about and just haven't published yet. I'm going to keep to a twice-weekly posting schedule, so that I don't get overwhelmed and spend all my time writing things for the Internet (which I have been doing recently).

My plan is that something will be published on Saturday of each week. Upcoming topics (in no particular order) include:

- A continued discussion of the priority of conscience
- The thin line between us and other animals
- How I value life (Hint: Human = "valuable", non-human = "about the same as inanimate matter, except with some animation" is FAR too simple).
- The other-centered life
- How ideas spread through society
- How to reconcile "There is an absolute standard of Good shared by all of humanity" with cross-cultural differences in moral priorities
- Why faith might be beneficial
- The surprising (to me) link between beliefs about the inherent goodness of the universe and beliefs in God

This list will be updated as I come up with new ideas.

One minor quibble, going back to a much earlier post.

At one point you brought up the size of man in the universe as an argument against man's significants.

Without going into detail, I have to say that I've always found these types of arguments to be extremely weak.

Size is such a relative thing. Compared to a star, yes, we are miniscule. Compared to an atom, we are enormous.

And science if fact tells us that human beings are just actually of medium to large size on the universal scale.

On that point, I thought you might find James Hannam's post on the topic interesting...

Are we very big or very small?

I realize that we seem insignificant when we look 'out there', but in reality size has nothing to do with any of the discussions being undertaken.

IMHO.

P.S. I think you might enjoy James Hannam's site overall. He is on of those uber-intellectual types who is a believer.

I don't agree with everything he writes, but he's a pretty valuable resource.

I wasn't talking about size, exactly. Of course physical dimensions do not indicate significance (a taller person is not more important than a short person). But I think that if the physical laws have given rise to life in one place in the universe, it seems likely that the same has happened elsewhere, probably many, many times. So I think the idea that the whole universe has been created solely for the benefit of humanity doesn't make a lot of sense. I think we (many of us, anyway) have an inflated idea of our own importance, even just on this planet, but even more so when you consider that there's so much more out there.
